Despite its name, the original settlers of New Holland were German, not Dutch. Those initial settlers had fled Germany in the midst of the Thirty Years' War, one of the most devastating conflicts in the history of Europe. Initially, the refugees had settled in Holland, and when they moved on to the New World, they honored their benefactors with the name of their new settlement.

Modern New Holland is home to Summer Fest, a yearly barbecue competition and bicycle race ("Where the Bikes Meet the Brisket"). The town also hosts the New Holland Farmers' Market, where local farmers and small business sell local produce, eggs, and organic meats and cheeses.
